Mycobacterium pinnipedii in a captive Southern sea lion (Otaria flavescens): a case report

  • Original language description

Mycobacterium pinnipedii is one of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex members and is a causal agent of pinnipeds' tuberculosis both in captive and wild living sea lions and fur seals. The seven year-old male of Southern sea lion from one zoological garden in the Czech Republic died during a surgery. Nodular lesions were found on serosal membrane lining diaphragm, as well as in lungs and in mesenteric lymph nodes. Samples of lesioned lung tissue and mesenteric lymph nodes, as well as submandibular lymph nodes, were collected for direct microscopical, culture and direct PCR examinations. Isolates obtained from these tissues were identified as M. pinnipedii using two different PCR methods. Direct PCR confirmed the presence of M. tuberculosis complex member DNA in all these tissues. An environmental study searching for M. pinnipedii was performed in the zoological garden, however, this causal agent was not found in any sample.
