Effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs submitted in diet of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
Original language description
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs in both human and veterinary medicine. Due to their widespread use and low level of clearance at waste-water treatment plants, their accumulation in the environment is increasing which leads to subsequent contamination of aquatic food chain. In aquatic environment, one of the most commonly detected NSAIDs is ibuprofen for its ability to accumulate in sediments, zooplankton and also higher trophic organisms such as fish. The main site for ibuprofen deposition in the organism is muscle, followed by liver and kidney tissue. Another widely prescribed NSAIDs representative, diclofenac, was declared to have cytotoxic and genotoxic effects. Moreover, diclofenac is able to cause alterations in renal functions, hyperplasia of gill tissue and hepatic histopathological changes. Both ibuprofen and diclofenac have negative effects on reproduction and are also known as an oxidative stress inductors. The aim of this experiment was to determine the effects of oral submission of ibuprofen and diclofenac to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Two different concentrations of ibuprofen and diclofenac were tested via feed exposure: the environmentally-relevant (2 µg/kg) and a hundred times higher (200 µg/kg). Additionally, the mixture of these NSAIDs was tested (combination of 2 µg/kg ibuprofen and 2 µg/kg diclofenac). Study lasted six weeks and was focused on possible deviations in the growth and behaviour of fish after NSAIDs exposure. Study will be complemented with results of haematological, biochemical, histological and immunological indices and oxidative stress markers.
