The analysis of a cluster of koi herpesvirus disease outbreaks in intensive carp aquaculture using molecular and conventional epidemiology

  • Original language description

Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (koi herpesvirus, KHV) caused a number of outbreaks of notifiable disease – koi herpesvirosis – in the Pardubice region (Czech Republic) in the 2018–2020 period. According to conventional epidemiology examination, routine carp relocation, shared watercourses and unsanitized fishing equipment have allowed the spread of the virus with 100% phylogenetic identity to 10 ponds in the region in 2018–2019. The spread of the virus was halted in 2019 using strčit eradication measures: active surveillance, depopulation, draining, disinfection and fallowing of positive ponds. Additional 2020 outbreaks from the same region showed no epidemiological connection to the previous years, as confirmed by molecular examination in the formo f Sanger sequencing analysis of 3 genomic region of the pathogen.
