Probiotics as an alternative to antibiotics: Lessons taken from chicken - microbiota interactions. 6th International Caparica Conference on Antibiotic Resistance, September 8-12, 2024, Lisboa, Portugal
Original language description
Chickens in commercial production are hatched from disinfected eggs in clean environment of hatcheries although Gallus gallus evolved to be hatched in nests. While chicks from hatcheries are colonised gradually by random microbiota of environmental origin, chicks hatched in nests are colonised by chicken-adapted microbiota by a mere contact with adult hens. Consequently, colonisation of chicks from hatcheries lasts from weeks to months while chicks in a contact with adult hens become colonised by adult type of microbiota during the first week of life. Importantly, chicks from hatcheries with underdeveloped gut microbiota are susceptible to infections with Salmonella or Campylobacter while those in contact with adult hens are resistant.
