The Fitting of Avar Type from West Bohemia
Original language description
This essay fills the gap in the existing collection of fittings of the Avar type in western Bohemia. It presents finds from five hilltop settlements in the vicinity of Pilsen and Tachov are presented, including a bronze strap and a buckle fitting a buckle fitting of a man's belt from the second half of the 8th or the beginning of the 9th century. Only the Merklín strap with its rhombic motifs with knots, and originally with a scarlet strap attached to another part may belong to the 1st half of the 8th century and represent an import from the Carpathian Basin or Eastern Europe. The other ornaments may have originated in Bohemia from more distant models. The most striking concentration of decorative fittings comes from the fortified hilltop settlement of Bezemín (Tachov district) and its surroundings. It is precisely in this micro-region, with the hilltop settlement of Bezemín as its center, that the links to strategically important military locations are most clearly visible, as well as those to the long-distance routes towards Bavaria. The Pilsen region with the fortified hilltop settlement of Bukovec and the finds of Carolingian coins from Chotěsov and Pilsen-Radčice also lies on the route to Regensburg.
