The fitting of Avar type from West Bohemia

In recent years, fittings of Late Avar type – albeit in smaller numbers so far – have even been found in western Bohemia, both in hilltop settlements (Kokašice-Švamberk, Okrouhlé Hradiště) and in hillforts (Bezemín, Plzeň-Bukovec, Lipno) and their vicinity. So far, we know of five sites. Most noticeable is the concentration of several decorations in the area of the hillfort of Bezemín and its vicinity (4 pcs.). Exactly in this microregion with Bezemín as its centre, we can most clearly see the links to – from the military perspective – strategic places as well as to roads. Such a long-distance route ran through the valley between the Bezemín hillfort and Šipín. The unprecedented concentration of elevated (hilltop) sites settled in the Early Middle Ages (at least four or maybe even six) is without a doubt connected to the location of these important routes. Our conclusions are also backed by the findings of western coins from the 10th–11th century.
