Deliverable D2: Good Practice Guide on the establishment of a calibration procedure using secondary transfer standards for the absorbed dose rate to water at 1 cm depth

  • Original language description

The work was carried out as part of the EMPIR project 18NRM02 PRISM-eBT from 1 July 2019 to 31 December 2022. This Good Practice Guide (GPG) describes the primary standards for the absorbed dose rate to water at 1 cm depth in water established by CEA, CMI, ENEA, and PTB for a selected electronic brachytherapy (eBT) X-ray devices and methods to transfer the quantity to clinics. The individual institutes developed primary standards for the absorbed dose-to-water rate in water at 1 cm distance from the surface of the spherical applicator with 40 mm diameter generated by the INTRABEAM eBT device at 50 kV tube voltage. At the end of the project the standards were compared by calibrating two individual transfer chambers at the respective institutes in several agreed conditions. For this the chambers and the phantom were sent around. Since the set-ups for the comparison are suitable transfer methodologies the calibrations were also evaluated in terms of practicability for the clinicians and calibration labs. This GPG summarises the pros and cons of the different calibration modalities and discusses their suitability for use in eBT dosimetry by clinicians as well as for secondary calibration labs. This GPG contains useful information for standardising bodies who are involved in drafting guidelines and recommendations for the safe use of eBT in the clinic.
