    Physical-Chemical Small Intestinal Injury

  • Original language description

The advent of capsule endoscopy as a non-invasive method of small bowel examination has enabled direct visualisation of small bowel disease including damage due to chemical or physical agents that are not detected by conventional radiology. A significant proportion of patients with small bowel injury due to side effects of drugs (e.g. NSAID-induced enteropathy) are oligo- or asymptomatic, and capsule endoscopy enables early identification of mild morphological mucosal changes that, in some cases, progress to unique diaphragm-like small bowel strictures. This chapter summarises and illustrates the spectrum of small bowel lesions induced especially by iatrogenic effect (including radiation and drugs).
