Original language description
Atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema) is a noncontagious inflammatory, chronically relapsing, and pruritic skin disease with a prevalence of 2-5% in young adults and up to 20% in children. Its exact etiology is unknown, but genetic and environmental factors probably play the main role. Most patients with atopic dermatitis have a positive family history of atopy. This disease may often have significant impact on quality of life of patients and their families.
