Can Translations Help Reveal Categorial Change?
Original language description
Can translations help reveal an ongoing process of grammaticalization? The paper addresses German participles I, verbal forms ending in -end and close to Czech participles called "přechodník". Out of these, at least one form, während, has already grammaticalized as a preposition (during). Based on a number of criteria, Czech-German InterCorp corpus is used to identify potential candidates of grammaticalization (while also utilizing the Europarl corpus). The resulting concordances are analyzed as to whether the translations show a loss of lexical meaning and a change of word class.
