The Classical Methodenstreit - Menger vs. Schmoller
Original language description
The classic methodological disputes in economics include the first battle of methods. It took place between Carl Menger, the founder of the Austrian school, and Gustav Schmoller, a member of the young German historical school. In a sense, it has continued up until today. The first battle of methods was manifested in three topics: induction versus deduction; exact laws versus empirical laws; and the dispute about methodological individualism versus collectivism.
