Why translation matters for language learners: a 21st century perspective
Original language description
The 20th century pushed translation and bilingual activities in general to the very margins of language teaching. Recent years, however, have seen the revival of translation as a regular and strategic complement, with multiple roles and numerous advantages for students and teachers, to monolingual methods that have dominated the field until now. The Bilingual Reform has been slowly spreading through the theory of language teaching, with new works providing detailed methodology of bilingual teaching activities for practising teachers to rely on. Moreover, with changing market requirements for the profile of the language student, translation as a fifth skill is becoming a welcome by-product of language learning which can be employed in personal as well as professional life settings.
