Impact of speed of source speech on the performance of simultaneous interpreter
Original language description
A too high speed of the source speech is one of the most frequent complaints of simultaneous interpreters we can hear in booths. If the speed of the source speech is one of the main factors influencing the performance of simultaneous interpreters, does it have the same impact on beginners/interpreting students as on experienced professionals? How do interpreters react to an increasing / increased speech rate? Is there a limit of the speed of source speech beyond which simultaneous interpreters start having serious difficulties to perform well? What strategies interpreters choose when interpreting speeches spoken in a fast rate? This presentation aims to briefly examine some of the most significant studies in the field and present their findings which might cast light upon these questions.
