Standard varieties as dynamic phenomena. A contribution to the methodological debate
Original language description
This presentation explores the issue of shaping standard varieties from the perspective of the Language Management Theory (Fairbrother/Nekvapil/Sloboda 2018, see also languagemanagement.ff.cuni.cz).The research question to what extent a variant is an element of a standard variety (or not) has usually been answered by reference to the frequency of such a variant e.g. in various genres of texts. Concentrating on object language and drawing upon the linguistic corpora, the usage-based approach neglects most of metalinguistic activities, that is how the speakers themselves experience language, although many experts claim that norms and standard varieties represent social phenomena.
