Comparative slavic metrics, 1967-2011 : Theory of verse as pursued by Polish and Czech structuralists of the third wave
Original language description
The article deals with the Comparative Slavic Metrics project (1967-2011), a long-term international research initiative based in Warsaw, which applied structuralist verse theory to the comparative study of Slavic literatures. Led by Polish and Czech researchers and involving scholars from nine Slavic countries, the project examined the relationship between metrical structures and linguistic systems using uniform methodologies and extensive empirical corpora. Despite political repression during the communist era, the group published nine volumes that advanced comparative research on Slavic verse and explored methodological possibilities for such research, including the pioneering use of punch card data processing. However, the article notes that the project's most valuable legacy lies not so much in its collective publications as in its profound influence on individual national traditions of verse theory, particularly through the later independent work of its key contributors, which drew on this research.
