"It is more than needed in our country". Contemporary Czech images of Scandinavia through the lens of literary criticism

  • Original language description

This study offers new insights into how contemporary Czech perceptions of Scandinavian societies are shaped through reviews of Scandinavian literature and films. By analyzing these reviews in both curated media and social platforms, this research identifies two central stereotypes: the emancipated Scandinavian woman and the egalitarian nature of Scandinavian societies. Applying Tzvetan Todorov's typology of relations to the Other, the study uniquely reveals how Czech critics employ activist comparisons, using Scandinavian models to critique local social realities. This analysis uncovers the enduring and dynamic role of stereotypes in cross-cultural discourse, demonstrating their power even in an age of supposed information abundance.
