Gems from the fire: tracing the Glass Jewels of Moravian Hallstatt elites

  • Original language description

Glass as an enigmatic substance has captivated human interest since the oldest times. Not until the Early Iron Age though did glassmaking truly flourish and spread across regions, related to broader processes of interaction between Central Europe and Mediterranean. While most attention has been given to East-West connections across the Mediterranean, links between North and South remain less understood. Prestige goods, like glass, played a pivotal role in fostering political relationships and expressing elite status. Alongside amber from the north, glass coming from south became a popular part of elite women's attire, supporting North-South trade and the Amber Road's development. Archaeometric methods, such as SEM-EDS analyses, provide us with insight into glass composition, , complementing data from a traditional typology. The contribution discusses over 4,500 glass beads from Býčí skála cave (Ha D1b-D3, 575-450 BC). Possible links to Northern Italy, Slovenia, and beyond will be discussed.
