Between 2023 and 2026, an international Czech-German research team is working on the topic of Amber Roads, utilizing advanced natural science analyses to identify local amber sources. Notably, the 6th century BC marked what was likely the most significant activation of amber trade routes in European history, connecting the Baltic and North Sea regions to Central and Southern Europe. These routes facilitated the distribution of vast quantities of the “gold of the north” across extensive areas. The exchange of amber was primarily orchestrated through social centers dominated by elites, underscoring the role of power structures in ancient trade. This paper explores the various forms of amber trade and circulation during the Early Iron Age, with a particular emphasis on the elites, elite networks and connections and their interactions along the Amber Roads, especially relations between Central Europe and Mediterranean.
