CAbd al-Quddūs Gangohī, Hindi verses and their religious context
Original language description
This article examines the life of the mystic CAbd al-Quddūs Gangohī (1456-1537) and his treatise Rušdnāmah. It especially focuses on the work's Hindi verses, which are divided into four thematic units. I discuss and clarify philosophical and theological aspects of these verses. This analysis draws various parallels and similarities with medieval Hindi poetry across traditions and schools. Among these, the literature of the Nāthyogis and the poetry of the nirguṇa Sants are considered. It appears that Gangohī reuses these sources without significant alteration. On this basis, at least two conclusions can be drawn. First, Gangohī's authorship of the Hindi poetry in the Rušdnāmah should be viewed with scepticism. Second, the intertextuality of the Rušdnāmah evidences a broader intercultural and interreligious dialogue within India, demonstrating how Sufis were engaged with Hindi poetry of other schools and traditions. In addition, I provide translation of selected Hindi verses found in the treatise, which have not been translated elsewhere.
