The Role of Ideophones in Khalkha Mongolian Motion Descriptions

  • Original language description

This paper addresses a hitherto little-explored aspect of motion ideophones in certain Asian languages: their compositional semantics. It offers a methodologically innovative contribution to understanding the functioning of Mongolian ideophones by examining their role in motion descriptions. Grounded in Ibarretxe-Antuñano's (2019) Semantic Grid and the framework presented in Talmy (2000), it scrutinises the semantics of ideophones using a large database and elicitation data, and describes the role of ideophonic constructions in forming core predicates or satellites in motion constructions. In addition, the status of ideophones in relation to manner verbs is examined in detail. The findings show the prominent role of Mongolian ideophones on the periphery of motion constructions, whereas their contribution to manner salience remains disputable.
