Mortuary data sets represent one of the most significant sources of information for archaeological research, offering critical insights into past societies, including their social and political organization, belief systems, and interactions with the environment. The study of mortuary remains today integrates a diverse range of methods, from material culture analysis and spatial modelling to bioarchaeology and isotopic studies, reflecting the inherently interdisciplinary nature of contemporary archaeology. The examination of tomb types and treatment of the deceased, as well as funerary assemblages and associated practices, provides a unique perspective on identity, status, and cultural expression across different temporal and spatial contexts. Moreover, iconographic depictions on grave goods, tomb paintings, and funerary reliefs, as well as statues and figurines from various contexts, reveal additional valuable aspects of social structures, religious beliefs, and cultural practices. At the same time, recent advancements in genetic research on skeletal remains from mortuary contexts have the potential to shed new light on longstanding debates while offering fresh insights into the lives of ancient populations. This conference thus aims to explore the diverse approaches to mortuary data, fostering discussions on both theoretical perspectives and methodological innovations in the study of death, burial, and the afterlife in the ancient world. More specifically, we aim to explore three key aspects of death: the moment of death and preceding life, the act of burial, and conceptions of the afterlife.
