The most familiar accounts of fear have to with particular things (dogs or devils) or particular states (unemployment or illness) or vague dreads. I want to look at a different kind of object: I look back on my life and I fear I may have wasted it. This object does not threaten me or my comfort in the normal sense; but I am anxious about the meaning of my life, in comparison to what (I think) it might have been, or to what I might have become.
