In 1501 an important hymnal was published by a printing house in the Old Town of Prague, where the anonymous printer of the Prague Bible worked at that time. The publication was made possible by funding from a group of Prague Utraquist burghers and councillors, whose names we know from the explicit of the Prague Bible. The Czech printed books published for Utraquist burghers' devotional needs reflect the increasing laicization of the Utraquist liturgy. This collection of songs, contrary to what we might expect, did not represent a selection of popular pieces of the time. According to Jan Blahoslav, one fifth of the Songs (17 texts in total) come from members of the Unity of the Brethren. However, this alone is not sufficient to conclusively place the Songs within the Unity of the Brethren. The texts on the saints and the sung catechism probably came from the Utraquist milieu, although contain ideas usually associated with the radicals and the Unity of the Brethren. The Songs may well be the earliest evidence of the use of the book printing for Utraquist schools, intended both for catechetical and liturgical purposes. The inclusion of texts from Unity of the Brethren authors must have been arisen from contact between the hymnal's editor and representatives of the Unity of Brethren, most likely within the circle of masters or bachelors of the Prague University.
