The "Righteous Resisters:" Memory of Holocaust Rescue in Slovakia
Original language description
This chapter examines how the reshaping of self-pleasing narratives of World War II coincides with the shifting role these tropes have in (and on) identity politics in much of Eastern Europe today. By studying how the narrative of heroic helpers has expanded resistance mythology, this chapter claims that the return of an ethnic reading of the past is akso a rejection of the more nuanced interpretations of World War II and the Holocaust, and of emotions of shame that are embedded in supranational historical narratives of the European project.
