Sexualization and gendered empowerment in a Sport for Development organization in Brazil

  • Original language description

This chapter examines how a Sport for Development (SfD) organization addresses gender and sexual diversity and how its sport programs shape the experiences of LGBTQ+ participants. The current context of knowledge production about SfD is characterized by limited engagement with sexuality and queer subjectivities, with only a partial investigation of queer desire and sport in the Global South. I use a queer lens to fill these gaps and to scrutinize relations between SfD and sexuality. This chapter is based on results from ethnographic research conducted within a sport Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Brazil. The findings suggest different levels of institutional support for LGBTQ+ participants and workers. I propose a re-imagination of local voices within SfD. Shifting toward decolonial and participant-centered SfD research necessitates acknowledging the diverse range of voices and realities, while also ensuring the support, visibility, and protection of queer individuals' rights within SfD programming.
