Homo Inter. Naar een mensbeeld van de tussenmens

  • Original language description

This essay reconsiders Kant's famous question 'what is man?' from a phenomenological point of view, against the backdrop of Palmen's remark that our era is the 'age of trans' and in the footsteps of Husserl's late observations on ego-splitting suggesting a modality of in-betweenness as later thematised by Heidegger. It is being argued that man - human being as such - should be understood as in-between (German: Zwischenhaft; French: entre-deux): the 'Homo Inter' is being put forward. More broadly situated in the contemporary societal predicament of polarization and the topical question of which anthropological understanding is thereby necessary, the speculative essay is divided in three parts. In the first part, a brief history of the concept of in-between is presented, examining the implications for the human being: in ancient Greek, medieval Arabic and contemporary western and eastern philosophy, albeit with special attention to Ricoeur and Lacan. In the second, oikological part, man's in-betweenness is traced back to his overall embeddedness in storytelling, which is further depicted drawing on metaphors of weaving fabric and broken mirrors. In the last part, this oikological anthropology of the Homo Inter is critically illustrated in four case studies: on Moses, on Antigone, on Arendt and Asumang. Wrapping up, with reference to Nietzsche and Musk possible implications of the Homo Inter for the idea of transhumanism are raised.
