Introduction: Provocations of New Materialisms at the Crossroads of the Natural and Human Sciences

  • Original language description

This chapter introduces recent new materialist approaches that work across the human and natural sciences not only by foregrounding a relational ontology but remaining responsive to and rigorously historicising and contextualising specific reading and measurement practices and their temporal, ethical and political implications. This includes the methodological practices advanced by the interdisciplinary working group 'New Materialisms at the Crossroads of the Natural and Human Sciences' in the special issues on Feminist Technoecologies, The Processes of Imaging/The Imaging of Process and Political Objects, as well as the three single and co-authored chapters that follow. A central proposition advanced in this chapter is to consider new materialisms as methodology in a practice that queries the integrity of fields and methods, that connects those conventionally considered apart by paying attention to their in/determinacies and hauntings, and pressing response-ably also for uncomfortable (methodological) implication.
