Validity of MorphoPASSE software for cranial morphological sex estimation in recent populations. Implications for estimating the sex of anatomically modern human fossils

  • Original language description

The work presented by Jaroslav Brůžek and collaborators (pp. 287-301, "Validity of MorphoPASSE software for cranial morphological sex estimation in recent populations. Implications for estimating the sex of anatomically modern human fossils" by Jaroslav Brůžek, Frédéric Santos, Šárka Bejdová, Anežka Pilmann Kotěrová, Rebeka Rmoutilová, MennattAllah Hassan Attia, Ahmed Habiba, and Jana Velemínská) addresses one of the scientific concerns raised by Dominique Henry-Gambier, who emphasized that "the reliable determination of age at death and sex is a prerequisite for characterizing and understanding funerary behaviour" (Henry-Gambier, 2008). This task is, however, more complicated for Palaeolithic fossils than for more recent skeletal remains. Indeed, the authors of this contribution conclude that the MorphoPASSE method (www.morphopasse.com), which relies on non-metric cranial traits, cannot produce conclusive results for Upper Palaeolithic fossils.
