"An interdisciplinary study that combines linguistic typology, corpus linguistics, and computational linguistics to quantitatively review Greenberg’s Universal 1 is presented. By proposing new metrics and formalizations, we aim to provide a more accurate representation of language usage to solve the problem of basic word order in natural languages. A typological characterization of 143 languages is proposed. We perform a typometrical study using Universal Dependencies in order to quantitative evaluate new metrics. Our results show universal trends and can serve to categorize languages and to test universals with languages that have never been quantitatively checked. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG."
