How does syntax grow during school years? A study of the noun phrase in explanatory texts written by high school students
Original language description
"To examine syntactic development during adolescence, the present study aimed to study noun phrases in explanatory texts written by 80 high school students belonging to two socioeconomic groups, high and medium-low SES. The frequency, density, lexical diversity, syntactic function, and complexity of nominal phrases were analyzed, and variance tests were applied to determine the effect of the independent variables (age/school level and SES). Results show that age/school level is the factor with the highest incidence in the observed syntactic performances, with a particularly significant effect on syntactic density of sentences and their lexical diversity. It is concluded that after the age of 12, syntactic uses undergo important changes and adjustments necessary to achieve a more specialized domain of language and discourse genres. © 2023 Universidad de la Serena,Departamento de Artes y Letras.
