Electromagnetic induction in the Earth's mantle and oceans: A spherical-harmonic approach
Original language description
The process of electromagnetic induction on a planetary scale can provide useful constraints on the thermal, chemical, and mineralogical state of the Earth's mantle, as well as the dynamic state of the oceans. This chapter presents the application of a spherical-harmonic approach to the EM induction equation in the spherical domain with spatially and temporally varying electric conductivity. Using the integral formulation and finite elements, we present the derivation of electromagnetic fields (i.e. the forward problem) in the time domain. For obtaining subsurface electric conductivity from these electromagnetic fields (i.e. the inverse problem), we share a deterministic inversion based on the minimization of a quadratic misfit function using the solution of an adjoint problem for effective evaluation of the misfit gradient in the model parameter space. The theory is accompanied by several application examples. (C) 2025
