Full-Wave Modeling of Whistler Wave Propagation Through the Martian Ionosphere
Original language description
Lightning flashes have been observed on several planets in the Solar System. However, atmospheric discharges have not yet been detected on Mars, despite theoreticalmodels predicting their occurrence within dust devils. We present a full-wave simulation ofan electromagnetic signal generated by a hypothetical lightning discharge. We show that itcan exceptionally propagate through the Martian ionosphere in the form of a whistler, whichwould be detectable by spacecraft orbiting Mars. In our work, we consider ionosphericplasma with a Chapman profile consisting of electrons and O2+ions under the conditions ofa region with a strong crustal magnetic field. We model the transmission of a single planewave through the ionosphere with different initial wave vector directions, wave polarizationand frequencies. Under these conditions, we investigate the causes of attenuation, suchas different types of collisions or reflection of the wave at the lower boundary of theionosphere. In this work, we demonstrate that the transmition of whistler signals throughthe Martian ionosphere is possible, but the favorable conditions are rare
