Shell nouns (cf. Schmid 2000, 2018) are abstract nouns which serve the importantfunction of encapsulating, or classifying, other, often more complex elements pres-ent in the discourse as simple concepts such asidea, conclusion, fact. Flowerdew &Forest (2015: 46) describe them as“open-class vocabulary items with discourse sig-nalling functions, items which [. . .] exhibit a requirement for specification in con-text and which [. . .] act as discourse signposts.
