Original language description
This article explores the interplay between chaos, national identity, and the cultural contributions of Czech composer and musician Adam Michna (1600–1676). Focusing on Michna’s works and their reception within the context of Baroque-era Czech society, the author delves into how his music navigates the tensions between religious, political, and cultural upheaval. Michna's compositions, often characterized by their sacred themes and expressive depth, reflect the turbulent period of the Thirty Years’ War and the subsequent efforts to forge a distinct Czech identity amidst external domination and internal discord. By examining his music as both a product and a catalyst of Czechness, the article argues that Michna’s work encapsulates the complexities of a nation in the throes of cultural and political transformation. The analysis positions Michna not only as a key figure in Baroque music but also as an emblem of Czech resilience and national self-definition during a time of chaos.
