Contemporary Poetry as Experiment in Pragmatics: A Corpus-Based Analysis of Pragmatic Markers

  • Original language description

The paper presents the results of a corpus-based discourse analysis of contemporary experimental poetry from the linguistic perspective of pragmatic markers against the background of everyday language. Poetic discourse, which takes the poetic function of language as a constitutive one, transforms the postulates of the pragmatics of ordinary language. New poetic practices often represent a kind of pragmatic experiment: the effect of pragmatic parameters inherent in conventional communication is tested here on the border between the norm and the anomaly. As part of the study, a poetic corpus was compiled, including three subcorpora in Russian, English, and Italian. The general conclusions drawn on the basis of the calculations are related to the difference in the frequency of use of a number of units in poetic discourse and in colloquial speech. The authors work with various pragmatic strategies, choosing as reference not only individual units, but also clusters of deictic, modal, discourse markers, etc. From the point of view of language differences, the analysis revealed that Italian and Russian poetry uses some units, such as discourse markers, more often than American poetry. Differences in linguistic structure also affect the specifics of a pragmatic experiment.
