Introduction
Original language description
This chapter introduces the fundamental concepts of corpus linguistics, beginning with a definition of a corpus. It outlines various types of corpora, including all-purpose national corpora like the British National Corpus and the Corpus of Contemporary American English, as well as specialised corpora such as the British Academic Written English corpus. It also introduces popular corpus tools such as Antconc, Sketch Engine and LancsBox. Additionally, it explores basic corpus searches, frequency data, tagging, meta-data, collocations, Keyness analysis, and dispersion. Throughout this chapter, readers will find tasks designed to develop basic competencies in corpus use and demonstrate various points under discussion.
