Lexical equivalences about the arm bones. The radio/rayo doublet in the Spanish medical discourse; Las equivalencias léxicas en torno a los huesos del brazo. El doblete radio/rayo en el discurso médico español

  • Original language description

The usage of terminological pairs for the denomination of the same reality is one of the characteristics of the historical medical discourse. Since the Renaissance, there has been a linguistic struggle —in strict, lexical— between those who postulated the terminologization of vernacular words and those who defended the use of Latin-cultist words. During the novator period, this discussion was resolved by the co-appearance of terms of different word formation processes like canilla or radio (‘forearm bone’). In addition, in this commitment to terminologize vernacular voices, cultism radio contended with its own double vernacular rayo. In this article we propose the lexical study of the doublet radio/rayo in the history of the pre-scientific Spanish and its presence in the different textual types of medical specialty. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
