In this paper we focus on non-standard word problems of the type What number makes sense? that were set to 2 nd and 3 rd grade pupils. Pupils' solutions were analysed with respect to the pupils' approach to solving of the problem. The same problems were set to teachers who participated in semi-structured interviews. We were looking at how they work with and how they would use non-standard word problems of the type What number makes sense?
