Folk songs: Tradition Embedded in Education: An Exploration of Their Role in Music Education
Original language description
Folk songs are essential carriers of cultural heritage, preserving the memories, customs, and dialects of our ancestors (Dutta & Kikhi, 2016). They serve as the foundation of musical traditions, reflecting a community's history, values, and social experiences (Harmon & Adams, 2018). This chapter explores the significance of folk songs in contemporary education and advocates for their inclusion in music lessons. It examines how these songs, as reflections of national traditions, can be effectively integrated into the classroom and what role they play in structuring music lessons. Special attention is given to the countries and regions where the authors reside -South Tyrol and the Czech Republic - and the ways in which folk songs are embedded in local music education systems.
