Comparative Approaches to the Use of Folk Songs in Music Education: The Czech Republic and South Tyrol
Original language description
This text presents a preliminary study exploring the use of music folklore in music lessons, with a focus on a comparative analysis of school practices in the Czech Republic and South Tyrol (Italy). The study aims to understand how folklore is taught, which types of folk music are prioritized, and the pedagogical goals emphasized in each context. It also examines the role of music education in passing on cultural identity and heritage to future generations. The study's findings suggest that folk songs are commonly integrated into school curricula and are valued for their cultural, educational, and ethnomusicological significance. Teachers' personal connections to folk music, often stemming from childhood experiences, play a critical role in determining how these songs are incorporated into lessons. Despite the recognition of their importance, the use of folk songs in classrooms is less frequent than anticipated. The methodology will be revised and expanded for the next phase of the study, which will include additional countries and regions. Future research aims to further investigate the role of folk songs in children's development and their educational value, while also developing didactic resources to enhance their integration into music education programs.
