Spatialising the Transmodern in Jim Crace's The Melody
Original language description
Jim Crace is known for his compelling, parable-like stories, which always address present-day concerns. In each of his novels he creates distinctive imaginary landscapes or cityscapes that appear other and familiar at the same time, which has led critics to coin the term "Craceland" to describe them. He also likes to depict "communities in transition," that is, groups of people who need to face up and adapt to an impending socio-economic change. His protagonists thus have to cope with the impacts of these transformations, which often involves their own displacement, territorial as well as in terms of their identity. This paper shows that Crace's novels in general, and The Melody (2018) in particular, reflect the transmodern paradigm shift. Using phenomenological geocriticism as its theoretical point of departure, it also demonstrates the ways in which the novel (re)presents what Eric Prieto calls entre-deux, or in-between, places, and how these respond to the defining postulates of Transmodernity.
