Education in nature programmes in the Czech Republic since 1989

  • Original language description

In this chapter we describe the cultural importance of sustaining Czech outdoor traditions and particularly summer camps, post WWII Soviet suppression. There was significant change post 1989 involving commercialisation, which impacted formal education at all levels. Non-formal organisations delivering 'education in nature' programmes and traditional culturally unique turistika activities re-engaged and adapted their practices, and commercial outdoor companies were formed, which did not exist before 1989. Charles University's Faculty of Physical Education and Sport has continued to be at the forefront of developing connections between turistika traditions, education in nature programmes, and adapting new trends from abroad. Palacky University in Olomouc, through its Faculty of Physical Culture has also had a similar outdoor approach focused on promoting experiential education. Staff at both these universities have been involved in developing creative and holistic outdoor experiential programmes with Vacation School Lipnice, a not-for-profit organisations, which linked to Outward Bound internationally post 1989.
