Evaluation of hydroxyl radical-scavenging activity of baicalin using HPLC method
Original language description
Abstract. The ability of baicalin, the flavonoid from the roots of the medicinal plant Scutellaria baicalensis, to scavenge hydroxyl radicals was studied with using sensitive HPLC method. The hydroxyl radicals were generated by UV photolysis of H2O2 andsalicylic acid was used as a trapping agent. The hydroxylation products of salicylic acid, 2,3- and 2,5- dihydroxybenzoic acids, were detected by HPLC. Baicalin caused decrease in the production of 2,3- and 2,5 - dihydroxybenzoic acid in a concentrationdependent manner and did not affect peaks of the standard of these dihydroxybenzoic acids. These results indicate that baicalin scavenges hydroxyl radicals generated by UV photolysis of H2O2. IC(50) values were estimated.
