PID2022-137372OR-C2: Novel antivirals against West Nile virus (WNV) infection targeting key events in viral replication and cellular factors
Original language description
West Nile virus (WNV) infection causes febrile, sometimes very serious and even fatal diseases. The outbreak of the virus includes Africa, Middle East, West Asia, Australia, North America, but it has also spread to southern, eastern or western Europe. The infection is transmitted via the bite of infected mosquitoes. In more than three-quarters of cases, the infection is asymptomatic, however, flu-like symptoms are observed in approx. 20% of those infected and, in some cases, severe neurological symptoms can develop, which can end fatally. Unfortunately, there is still no specific treatment, so this project focuses on the identification of new molecules that could be used as new substances with an antiviral effect.
