Ce motif apparait aussi dans le livre Heart of Darkness de Joseph Conrad, dans Voyage au Congo d'André Gide et dans The African Witch de Joyce Cary. Le Clézio s'inspire de Heart of Darkness et de Voyage au Congo. Il récrit le livre The African Witch de Joyce Cary.
