Embedded interactions and media frames in live journalism
Original language description
The communicative scheme in the mass media is characterized by significant complexity arising from the interplay between several communicative levels (frames). On the most basic level, the verbal interactions between participants in the first frame are mediated to mass audiences within the second frame. In some genres, several additional levels can be distinguished. Such mutually embedded levels typically have impermeable boundaries, yet they occasionally allow for across-the-border interactions to occur. A pragmatic account of media discourse thus needs to consider not only horizontal interactions (occurring between speakers on the same level, typically in authentic and mediated face-to-face encounters) but also vertical ones.
