Karel Čapek: The Czech Frankenstein
Original language description
The robot as a main figure and symbol of technological progress myth erased the meaning of robot as an ambivalent metaphor of state of humanity in Machine age. In the myth of technological progress the robot works rather as a super-machine ? symbol of rapid technological development. However, under the simple and evident message of the myth, whole cluster of other meanings of robot still lives. Karel Čapek's Robots, which were introduced to the world in his play R. U. R., Rossum's Universal Robots (1920/21), will be interpreted from the point of view of semiotics in the lecture. The first embodiments of the Robot as a drama character in stage productions in Prague, New York, London, Berlin, Vienna and Paris will be presented. The visual material will show the way of Robot's transition for the realm of fiction to the realm of facts.
