Tracing Music Aesthetical Theories in 18th Century Ottoman Treatises: A Step Within Music Aesthetic Comparison
Original language description
The Music Aesthetic Comparison is a method of bringing closer the foreign, distant or unknown musical cultures at the introductory level. It is necessary to employ the aesthetics of music in order to actually understand and compare the principles of thealien theories with those that are familiar, providing a more valuable knowledge of foreign cultures than in the form of a compendium of rudimentary facts, which only could be comprehended within the standard curriculum if all the relevant classical cultures should be involved. If the college-curricular aesthetics of music adopts at least partly the agenda of foreign musics, it might also gain back some of its credit, since its purpose has been questioned for it is considered having reached its limits as a discipline of Western philosophy by some. Moreover, the question of what is classical music and what are the criteria and typology of beauty-creating principles is eminently the domain of aesthetics.
