Original language description
This contribution summarizes all published etymological attempts to explain the Common Slavic word *ryba “fish”. A critical examination in the light of semantic parallels favors two proposed etymological solutions which confirm the comparison with West Germanic *rūbō “caterpillar; burbot, eelpout”.
