Indo-European ‘bird’
Original language description
The aim of the present study is to verify the generally accepted cognates designating ‘bird’ in Indo-Iranian, Armenian, Greek, Albanian, Italic. They are analyzed from the point of view of historical phonetics, word-formation and semantics. The second step is a discussion of the already published attempts to identify the same root in Celtic, Germanic and Balto-Slavic. In the third step we newly add the probable cognates in the Anatolian and Tocharian branches. Finally, this apparently generic term for ‘bird’ is discussed in relation with the term ‘egg’.
